Selecting a Good Topic for a Research Paper or Thesis

Sometimes inventing ideas for the topic becomes a tricky task for the young scholar. He or she may have understood the assignment perfectly and is full of excitement for the upcoming challenge at hand but the seemingly easier task of getting initial ideas may put the entire plan into disarray.

Infinite number of interesting and fun-filled methods can be used in the process of choosing a topic; let us discuss some of the more popular ones:

FREEWRITING- this is a real fun way of approaching the process of inventing a topic for one’s paper. All one needs to do is set up a watch or timer for around ten or fifteen minutes and then start to write down whatever comes to one’s mind regarding the subject. The important thing is not to stop and go on putting out whatever there is in your mind regarding the topic. This flow or “stream of consciousness” will definitely give rise to adequate ideas regarding the choice of a topic. The important thing is to let the ideas out and not care about the grammar and syntax of the matter subsequently produced.

BRAINSTORMING- this method is similar to the one mentioned above in many aspects. The significant difference lies in the method of putting down the ideas. In this technique one writes down the keywords that comes to the mind regarding the topic and not an endless procession of words like in freewriting

MAPPING- similar to brainstorming in most aspects but is more oriented to the paper. One writes down a central word or a concept from which various other concepts come to the mind; one of these branches will flourish into the final topic.

CUBING- a very interesting process in which the topic is considered as a three-dimensional figure and examined from six different or avenues.

All the above methods may be used simultaneously to procreate out-of-the box and thought provoking ideas for the paper.
