How to Create an Outline
Creation of an outline facilitates the tedious task of writing a research paper to a great extent. Not only does it help in the basic writing process, it is a device through which one can compose one’s thoughts and arrange the erratic ideas flashing through the mind.
It also renders the paper logical and the format well organized. A comprehensive outline also demonstrates the much-needed link between various ideas that get formed during the making of a research paper.
Other benefits of a classy outline include the organization of boundaries for the sub-paragraphs and also the development of an overview for the paper.
Four major techniques may be followed while creating a proficient outline, a brief overview of them are:
Parallelism-Each and every headline should follow a parallel or equivalent make up, for e.g., when the first headline starts off with a noun, the second should do the same.
Coordination- The form and structure of the first heading should be complementary to the following ones; i.e., the significance of the information contained in the first should be similar to the information contained in the second. For e.g., if the first heading reads: Evaluating data collected in the college campus; the second should read something like: Evaluating data collected from the college websites.
Subordination- the data and information that is contained in the headings should be more generalized; while the data presented in the sub headings more specialized.
For e.g.- if the heading discusses the most influential human beings in one’s life the sub headings may discuss two specific men belonging to that category (say, his or her high school teacher and father).
Division- Each and every heading should be sub divided into multiple parts that helps in simplifying complex ideas. For e.g., if the heading is scheduled to discuss a person’s career highlights, it may be sub divided into his academic achievements, his work experience and his extra curricular achievements.
A competent outline goes a long way in the process of creating a successful research paper.
