How to make corrections on Research Papers
Despite every precaution and hard work students fall prey to some basic errors that may ruin the impression of the fruits of their hard labour. It is thus beneficial to go through a brief overview of the common errors that may put a blot on an otherwise consummate research paper.
Quotes-On some occasions direct quotations are necessary for a complete understanding of the concepts being brought forward in the paper; this is especially true for papers dealing with fields such as literature and history. However, in most student papers direct quotes are not essential especially as the focus of the paper is to highlight the student’s own views about the topic of discussion and not other’s opinions on the subject.
Irrelevant Information-Anecdotal notes on students, teachers or other such personal statements are entirely unacceptable in a research paper. Students in their zeal and vigor tend to present such personalized accounts to stress their points. It is to be noted here that a research paper is primarily an erudite and scholarly work on a technical aspect of a subject and not fiction, though some amount of literary skills and interesting facts are required for its success.
Grammar and Spelling- Basic and elementary errors in grammar and sentence construction may create an unfavorable impression in the mind of the teacher and are best avoided. Similarly spelling errors will take away the vitality and beauty of the work. It is advisable to use a dictionary and a spell check while putting together final draft.
Superficiality and Oversimplification- The purpose of a paper is not just to state facts and results but also to explain their cause. Pointless posting of facts, figures and reports on certain phenomena may not fetch any points if there has been no effort made to explain the reasons behind them. Superficial approaches such as these may only cause annoyance to the instructor.
