Will A Radar Detector Warn Me In TimeWill A Radar Detector Warn Me In Time We’ve all been there. You’re late for work, so you step on the gas a little extra. Not much, only four or five miles an hour over the speed limit. But there’s just not enough time – you’ve minutes before you’re late again for the third time this month, so you drive a little faster. You’re almost there, less than a mile – and then the siren starts and the red and blue lights flash on your rearview mirror. You’ve been nailed. If only there were a way to prevent inconveniences like this, but there’s no surefire way, of course, but many people try their hands with radar detectors. These are perfectly legal in all fifty states except for Virginia and Washington, D.C.; passive radar detectors are hailed as “police proofing” for vehicles. But are they really as effective as their ad copy claims? The answer is yes and no. The speed guns the police use work by measuring the Doppler shift in radar waves reflected from your car as it moves. The faster you’re going, the more the shift in the signal, allowing for a simple and accurate speed measurement. Radar detectors work by catching traces of this signal and sounding an alarm. The good news is that most police officers don’t ever bother turning off their speed guns – meaning that the radio signal is being transmitted continually, making it easy to detect and giving you plenty of time to slow down before the officer can make an accurate track on your speed. The bad news is that some police officers wait until they’re sure you’re speeding before hitting the gun – and by then, of course, it’ll be too late. So, passive radar detectors will help you out much of the time – but they are not foolproof. Don’t use them as an excuse to drive recklessly. An excerpt For more information Click here
