Types Of Radar DetectorTypes Of Radar Detector You might as well admit it. The fact that you’ve even started reading this article probably means you’ve sped in the past, been caught, and would rather not get caught again. So, you think, what would be the best way to avoid getting caught? Well, you think, you could just not speed. You think about this for a moment; discard it. Sometimes you’re just late, and then what choice do you have. So your mind turns to the thought of radar detectors. Is that even legal? You’ll be happy to learn that it is – unless, of course, you plan to drive through Virginia or Washington, D.C. There are a number of types of radar detectors for speeders of all types and budgets. The simplest (and cheapest) type of radar detector is the passive radar detection model. Radar speed guns work by reading the Doppler shift in reflected radio waves. These radio waves are emitted by a police officer’s speed gun, and if the gun is on, these radar detectors will know it’s there long before the officer can get an accurate reading on your speed. The good news is that many officers don’t ever bother turning their speed guns off, giving you plenty of warning to slow down. The bad news is, some don’t. That’s where the more advanced type comes in. Active radar jammers confuse speed guns and laser speed traps, preventing them from getting an accurate read on how fast you’re going. Keep in mind that active jammers are illegal in the United States – but then again, so is speeding. Whatever solution you decide on, remember that a radar detector is no excuse to drive irresponsibly. There are consequences for such actions far worse than a simple speeding ticket.
